Macro Competition Entries

Published at November 26, 2010

Last night was Camera 35’s ‘Macro & Close Up Photography’ competition. I had these shots in holding for a while now, but now that the competition is done I can post them here. While they didn’t score as well as I had hoped, I’m happy with the result of each of these three. This is actually three shots of the same match at different points in it’s “life”, stitched together in post....

The Old Man of Storr

Published at November 5, 2010

Because of the high-contrast light that we got the morning we hiked up to the Old Man of Storr, I think most (if not all) of my photos from there work much better in B&W than they do in colour....

Tokavaig Pano

Published at November 1, 2010

This one’s from the last day of the photo tour. I’m not sure what the island is called, but I know we were on the Tokavaig peninsula of the Isle of Skye, right next to Dunscaith Castle....

Published at October 24, 2010

This is a six-shot pano of Loch Fada with the Storr (with the Old Man clearly visible) in the background. If you click-through to flickr, you can see the added notes that show just how far the hike was to get up to the Old Man for the photo in the previous post. ...

The Old Man of Storr

Aquarium Adventures

Published at September 6, 2010

Over the last few weeks I’ve been giving my 20 gallon aquarium a makeover. I discovered that it had sprung a leak, so I had to drain it (moving the fish to a temporary, 10 gallon, home), strip off all the silicone, and then reseal the whole thing. I decided that this was a good time to re-do all the decorations to give it a more natural look. Here’s the ‘before’ shot:...

Last of the Puffin Posts

Published at August 15, 2010

Here are the last two puffin photos I’ll post from the trip to Elliston. The puffins are likely heading back out to sea soon, so I won’t have another chance to see them again until next year. ...

Puffins in Elliston

Published at August 9, 2010

Jen & I made it to Elliston this weekend to take some puffin photos. This will be the first of a few posts from the trip, so I figured I’d start it off with the cast of characters: And here’s one in flight: More to come tomorrow!...

Sheep Laurel

Published at July 21, 2010

Every now and then when we’re out shooting, Jen wants to borrow one of my lenses. If it’s the one I currently have on my camera, we usually just swap so neither of use has to dig through our bags. In this case (in many cases, actually… it’s her favourite lens for good reason), I got her 100mm macro lens, so I had to seek out something small to shoot....

Tale of a Whale

Published at July 20, 2010

My only keeper from the EcoTours Zodiac tour of the 15 frames I got off before I got too sick to hold up my camera. When I didn’t start the day at 100% I should have known better than to go, but I really wanted to get some puffin pictures....

Swimming into the Sunset

Published at July 5, 2010

One of my first shots with my new Canon 7D, taken last Monday evening during a walk around Quidi Vidi. Notice that all the ducklings are not quite lined up. I guess sometimes it’s hard to get all your ducks in a row, even if you are a duck yourself....

Nesting Junco

Published at June 21, 2010

I came across this little bird when I was mowing my lawn. The nest was hidden in the tall grass and I didn’t see it until it flew off, afraid of the weed whacker. Luckily, it came back to the nest and the four eggs left inside....

Heaven &' Hell

Published at June 7, 2010

First post from my trip to Ottawa… Let me start by saying that these colours are essentially what they were out of the camera. I was trying to get some neat shots of clouds reflected in tall buildings while I was in Ottawa. When I looked up at these ones through my polarizer, the one on the left turned red, so I had to stop and shoot it....

Lego Traveller in Flatrock

Published at May 23, 2010

I picked up this little guy recently at Toys R Us. He’s called the ‘Traveller’, but I was sold on him when I saw his mini camera. I thought I might start a series of photos of him in different places. I’m not 100% sure how often I’ll do these, but if it becomes a habit, I’ll start numbering them and grouping them together, etc. For his first trip, here are a couple of shots of him in Flatrock....

Self Portraits

Published at March 5, 2010

One of this week’s competitions at Camera 35 was ‘self-portrait’, this worked out well since Jen bought me a light-stand and umbrellas for Valentine’s Day. Here are my submissions. This last one is because Brian had the idea (that I decided to steal) of ‘pushing the limits’ a bit for these competitions. With Myself”) As a side-note, Jen’s self-portraits are also posted now too (and I’m featured in one!...
